Don’t let the sun go down just yet with these chic boutique getaways – they’re only a short hop away.
Fazenda Nova, Algarve, Portugal
Best for… switching off
The low-down: Head east from Faro airport (and garish package-tour Algarve) and a 30-minute drive delivers you to a different world. Fazenda Nova is a 10-room boutique hotel that genuinely feels like you’re staying with friends – very cool friends. Set back from a quiet country road, amid fragranced gardens, its luxe rooms and apartments all have private outside space for those who truly want to be alone. While the rooms are a delight, you’ll want to be outside – eating seasonal food in the restaurant, A Cozinha, relaxing by the infinity pool or drifting off in the nap-inducing pods that hang in the gardens. This is quite simply a laid-back treasure of a place.
Out and about: The never-ending golden beaches of the Ria Formosa Natural Park are a short drive away. From the nearby fishing village of Fuseta, a 10-minute ferry ride takes you to the unspoilt sand dunes and calm waters of Ilha da Fuseta (don’t forget a parasol; there’s no natural shade). After a day on the beach, Fuseta’s simple roadside restaurants will grill the fish of your choice, fresh from the sea. If you’re drawn to brighter lights, the unspoilt city of Tavira has artisan shops and galleries galore. For a break from sardines, try La Petite France, set back from the quayside, for fresh goat’s cheese salads and excellent wines.
