Messi denies reports about huge Ibiza club tab, then publication retracts it – FOXSports.com

UPDATE: Lionel Messi took to social media to deny the reports circulating of  his €37,000 tab in Ibiza, writing on the original image: “What a way to talk s***. What a way to invent lies. The cutest thing is that people believe it.”

The account that posted the image deleted it, which also deleted an apology in Spanish. Here is the translation:

“Yesterday we published an image of a supposed food bill of Messi and his friends in Ibiza. A little while after, Lionel, from his official account, commented on the photo we published, dismissing the authenticity of it. Before we publish anything we always confirm the veracity of the news with at least three sources. If it doesn’t pass this filter, the news doesn’t get published. In this case, we found three reliable sources that published it and that’s why it was published. Obviously we were mistaken. The post has been erased and we wrote to Lionel internally. Now we ask for public forgiveness from all of our followers and again, especially lionel, who, like everyone knows, we admire and respect profusely. We feel extremely honored that our posts have such a reach and are read by a legend of soccer. With this comes great responsibility. We will take better steps to avoid falling for fake news.”

Below is our original post:

Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Cesc Fabregas went to Ibiza. That’s pretty normal — the island is a popular place for anyone who has money and wants to party.

The Barcelona players definitely have money and definitely wanted to party … so they apparently ran up a tab at the club that topped €37,000.

That’s actually pretty mild. After all, we’ve heard of athletes running up club tabs over $100,000 and €37,000 is only 10 percent of what Messi makes after taxes each week.

What’s really fascinating here is what they spent all that money on:

  • 27 pizzas
  • 7 hamburgers
  • 8 quesadillas
  • Shrimp and tuna crudo with caviar
  • 41 bottles of Dom Perignon

Oh, and all of this is before tip.

But really, ordering pizzas and burgers and quesadillas then tossing in some caviar is the move of some people who are stunting too hard to care about anything and that’s beautiful.
